Lament
A Note From The Composer
Lament is a solo for unaccompanied guitar, incorporating lyrical counterpoint and a serenely traditional sense of melody. While today’s innovative musical approaches often influence my work, I wrote Lament to be a bridge to a more familiar aspect of the instrument. There is something kindred about a melody that tosses in our heads after the concert has ended. And, I find that lines approachable by the human voice sometimes provide a sense of authenticity, a genuine nature that – on occasion – cues our emotions respond.
Indeed, Lament was named more for its mood than as an addition to the lament genre. The piece is a reflection on introverted expression. However, while it is not a recognition of loss, it is a recognition of sorts, expressing the fondness of possibilities unexplored, the churning of doubts we keep to ourselves.
It seemed fitting to me that this subtlety of thought might be highlighted with a familiar sense of melody, and that these secreted expressions would be portrayed by the uniquely intimate sound of acoustic guitar.
